Hurom Masticating Juicers Review

Hurom Masticating Juicers Review
When it comes to juicing green vegetables, masticating juicers are simply the best and the way to go. The other type of juicers, the centrifugal juicer type, just does not measure up well. This is because masticating juicers extract juice from fruits as well as vegetables slowly but effectively. Masticating juicers not only extract up to 35% more juice from fruits and vegetables than centrifugal juicers, the juice extracted tastes better and is also more nutritious. Masticating juicers are also generally more expensive than centrifugal juicers but the quality of their juice and the extra quantity they produce, make it worth it in the long run.

Hurom Juicers

Hurom is a manufacturer of high quality masticating juicers. In fact it was Hurom that manufactured the first slow juicer back in 1974. Over the years, the company has modified and improved its products to become one of the most trusted brands when it comes to juicing. Juice from a Hurom juicer is quite thick and tastes very natural. The core component of Hurom’s technology is the Ultem-Screw, which is Hurom’s exclusive auger.

It is the part of the juicer that slowly tears apart the fibers of the foodstuff inside, thereby releasing its enzymes and nutrients from deep within. This is better than grinding and crushing that tend to destroy the enzymes. The slow movement of the auger also helps to avoid oxidation of the juice, which is a big problem with centrifugal juicers. Also, Hurom juicers use about 150 Watts of electric energy and rotate about 80 times per minute for older machines or 40 times per minute for the second generation Hurom juicer models. Centrifugal juicers on the other hand use an average of about 1,500 Watts of electric energy and rotate over 1,000 times per minute.

How to Use a Hurom Juicer

It is important to first chop the fruits or vegetables into small pieces. Then feed them into the juicer’s feeding chute. For the newer, second generation machines, you can also select how much pulp you want. Hurom juicers are self feeding and will slowly pull the fruit of veggie pieces inside and slowly squeeze and shred them to release juice. After the juice is gently squeezed out, it is then filtered through the strainer and into the juice chamber and you can directly observe how much juice is being collected inside the chamber. The finished juiced can be collected from the spout in front. There is also a spout by the side from where the dry pulp drops out.

How to Clean Hurom Juicers

After a juicing session you can just run a cup of water or two through the juicer for a quick rinse. Thorough washing is also easy and takes less than 5 minutes because the parts come off easily so you can rinse them under running water. The newer juicers also have this system to ensure that you re-assemble the parts correctly by not starting to juice until all parts are correctly assembled. The washable parts for the three models are basically the same and include the feeding chute, the chute’s cover, the auger, the juice chamber, the spinning brush and the strainer.

Pros of Hurom Juicers
  • Quiet

By design every Hurom juicer is extremely quiet. You can use it to juice early in the morning without disturbing your sleeping spouse or roommate.

  • Aesthetics

Hurom juicers are beautiful to look at especially the second generation juicers. The design of the juice chamber also makes it possible to watch the juice level slowly rise when juicing and this is pretty cool.

  • Versatile

A Hurom juicer can juice almost any edible item. You can use it for different kinds of fruits, leafy and hard vegetables, soybeans, nuts e.t.c.

  • Energy Efficient

Hurom juicers use just 150 Watts and normally rotate at 80rpm while the second generation juicers rotate at 40rpm.

  • High Quality and Yield

The slow masticating process of Hurom’s juice extraction produces not only high quality juice with more intact nutrients and enzymes, it also yields more juice volume. When you consider the fact that fruits and vegetables are not all that cheap and that their costs do add up in the long run, then every extra drop of juice gained is a plus for Hurom.

  • Easy to Clean

All Hurom juicers are easy to clean. The parts come off and on very easily and since the pulp is ejected, washing is easy unlike some other juicing machines.

  • Small Dimensions

The Hurom Juicer does not require too much space. It can therefore fit in naturally into many kitchens. This is especially important for people with small kitchens or limited living space.

Cons of Hurom Juicers
  • The Auger can Get Jammed

Given the design of Hurom juicers, a juicer could get jammed if you try to force feed it.

  • More Work Cutting Up Pieces

The design of the Hurom juicer makes it mandatory that food items are cut up into pieces before feeding the machine with them.

  • They are not Really Cheap

Yes, price can be an issue with the Hurom juicer. They are not cheap but they do make up for their price with the quality of the juice that they produce.

The Contents of the Box

All Hurom juicers come with almost identical contents except for the slight differences between the first and second generation juice chambers and other slight design differences. The standard contents in a Hurom package include:

  • The main Body
  • A hopper or feeding chute
  • A hopper lid
  • An auger
  • A juice chamber
  • A spinning brush
  • A fine strainer
  • A smoothies strainer
  • A juice container
  • A pulp container (for the waste)
  • Two cleaning brushes
  • A pusher (for feeding the machine)
  • A tofu frame (for making Tofu)

The three models of Hurom juicer are in truth 99% identical. There are just slight modifications in the newer models. If you feel satisfied with the quality of Hurom juicers and you have decided to buy one but you are not quite sure which, then you should choose the latest model, the number two product in this review (HH-SBB11). On the other hand you could equally choose the HU-100 which costs less money, because it is also a Hurom, just not the latest.
